I didn't know what love counted for
I didn't want its disappearing liquid

Sheltering under the lip of the flood
I watched the grinning spindles

dodging the offhandedness of oblivion,
not wanting to lose either you or me

I listened out for destructive music
and bought a licence, a one-off payment

using the post office so as to share
completely in the threat of extinction

Just to wind you up, I insisted on kissing
Mars at lunchtime and growing tea

I have always found this option to be
reliable on long-weight fate days

Suddenly I looked up and horses
were watching me in the dark
