I was isolated from the grief
they kept me in plastic bubbles
Encapsulated

(that was the clever word printed
on the packet)

I looked below the surface and could
only see the patternings of nothing
underneath

but you were there and you danced
better than everyone else

my lover knew her grief and I saw
her more clearly than I could see
you

I should have listened more and
played the fade in a thick, fat way
on semi-acoustic

in that habitual erroneous rhythm which
still leaves me to wonder why I'm
left untouched

I have always dealt in unstated elegies,
the beats, reckonings and pauses where
I was not present
